Britain is a maritime nation that has been shaped by our relationship with the sea. The same is true about our nation’s coinage. Whether this is a direct and obvious link, in the form of images of ships on our coins, or in slightly more obscure interaction between trade and the production of coinage, our connection with the sea has had a far-reaching impact on our coinage. Over six episodes we will explore this relationship, using the coinage to examine topics as varied as shipwrecks, life onboard ship through to the myth and allure of pirates.
